Anima – Message from the President!
We receive everyday several calls for rescuing animals.
When this happens, Anima send its rescue team to the place and analyze case by case.
Usually we make this analysis mainly for dogs as we have no capacity for receiving them.
Our decision depend only if the animal is in risk or not and is not usually an easy decision!
We feel the pressure and the stress every time we have to do that!
In Anima, we have dogs in corridors, in the association area, in the vet area where we should have vet equipment and only sick animals (we are postponing the buying of equipment for our vet clinic mainly because of that, which complicates our life and makes our costs increasing substantially), in front of elevators, in the terrace and sometimes even in toilets.
Which animals we collect?
(1) Animal in danger (animals abandoned in high traffic areas such as bridges and highways, animals showing strong signs of malnutrition. Abandoned puppies and kitties are considered animals in danger);
(2) Sick or injured Animals.
(3) Abandoned animals, such as those that demonstrate inability to survive outside on their own.
An animal that do not fit these requirements, is not alone, lives in sites, and is not in real danger, we try to put him in our Special Protection Program (SPP), controlling, feeding and providing vet assistance.
In our daily operations we find people that try to convince us to keep animals that do not fit those requirements.
Usually they say: I have already dogs at home, I can not afford to have more. The dogs will be eaten.
And threat us with messages in facebook and so on.
Anima has in its shelter and in Coloane Kennel 370 dogs (338 +32) and can not afford more.
And Anima handle outside Anima and Coloane kennel, around the same number of dogs and thousand of cats.
We have to be mentally honest, unfortunately Anima can not save all animals in Macau!
We do not Cage and we do not Kill, so we are limited in our actions!
However we work hard to find alternatives!
Please see: in 2015 up to the end of November, Anima rescued 364 animals and only 165 were adopted. As you may imagine we could not keep all of them. Those that were not considered in danger, after de-sex and after being treated, were returned to their place and became our SPP animals. They were 57!
45 new animals increased our shelter population this year, up to November!
105 animals died, some were already collected dead, mainly in areas that we still do not control.
Others died mainly of natural causes and virus or flu.
Even being very careful, the shelters are not the best solution for any animal!
The best solution is an adoption!
People think that all construction sites’ workers eat animals.
This is not true!
In 100 sites we may have only one or two where such cases of eating animals are reported!
So, those who disagree with us are welcome to pay a visit to Anima and Coloane Kennel instead of systematically complain and doing nothing to help the animals.
Majority of them never found one hour in a year to pay us a visit!
They prefer complain and complain which is the easiest way to clean their hands!
We will thank all of them if they can call other associations, as an alternative when we are not able to do what they think we must do.
There are five more associations that protect animals in Macau, one of them caging animals, but not killing!
Thank You!
Albano Martins
President
